Maintenance of Septic Systems using BIO-GREEN® biodegrader
A well designed and constructed septic system that is carefully operated and maintained should operate a number of years before needing pumping to remove accumulated ash and inorganic residues. With care, and good drainage conditions, pumping intervals of ten years or more are possible on residential systems.
Ideally, almost all of the liquid and solid waste is organic and biodegradable however, ash and inorganic material will always accumulate on the bottom of the tank and sooner or later it must be pumped out to restore tank capacity.
Septic system enemies include chemical poisons, fats & oils, soaps & detergents, and inorganics. Chemical poisons such as strong acids, alkalis, chemical drain & bowl cleaners, bleaches, germicides (including mouthwash and deodorant soaps), and pesticides should be avoided as much as possible! Cooking fats and oils should be minimized as should excessive amounts of soap, detergents, and inorganic substances. Petroleum oils and greases should be avoided as should high phosphate chlorinated automatic dish washer detergents.
Organic fats & oils, soaps, and detergents are a part of everyday living and cannot be entirely avoided. The bacteria capable of biodegrading these substances are not naturally available, so they must be introduced into the septic system so it can function properly.
